The Nicholas County News Since 1867
A few things about us

In March of 2007 Chris McGehee, a Brandenburg businessman, with operations in several states, purchased The Nicholas News and The Nicholas Countian & The Carlisle Mercury and combined the publications into one, paid circulation newspaper.

The Nicholas Countian, which was more than 12-years-old, was distributed free of charge and mailed as a third class or bulk mail publication.

The Nicholas News celebrated its first anniversary July 1, 2006. The paper was first published in 2005 as a third class – free distribution paper but earned status as the legal publication for Nicholas County in October 2005 and was distributed as a periodical publication beginning that October.

The Nicholas News was a paid, bona fide circulation newspaper.

When the newspapers were combined a single flag of The Carlisle Mercury was established, with a mission and operational statement of The Nicholas County News since 1867 incorporated as part of the banner.

The Carlisle Mercury was established in 1867 and has been independently owned, with the exception of about seven years, since its inception.

The Carlisle Mercury is a weekly newspaper printed product focusing on the people and news events of Nicholas County, distributed and sold at stores and other businesses throughout Nicholas County and in adjoining counties.

Taking a unique approach to providing a daily news product to Carlisle and Nicholas County, thecarlislemercury.com serves as a daily news portal for county, regional and statewide news.

It is our mission to make every effort to say yes, as often as we can, staying within reasonable newspaper ethics and practices.

Under new ownership the papers, as a combined product, will begin to offer additional items, including television listings, entertainment items, a weekly magazine – American Profile – and a monthly business journal as part of its total product.
