Nicholas teachers part of summer program

A group of teachers from Nicholas County, Charles Straub, and Mapleton Elementary Schools took part in the Kentucky Reading Project this summer from June 4=17.

The two-week intensive professional development training is hosted by Morehead State University, and focuses on specific strategies for literacy instruction. The teams from Charles Straub, Nicholas County and Mapleton Elementary Schools are comprised of Kathy Compton, Lindsay Fryman, Jessica Platt, and Jenna Smoot.

They were part of a larger group of twenty teachers from kindergarten through fifth grade that will continue to meet throughout the school year, learning and sharing techniques of a balanced literacy instruction in their classrooms.

This cadre from Morehead State University will join their other university cadre cohorts from across the state in Lexington in April 2009, when they complete the program.

They will share their individual literacy action plans that they develop during this year long training for their respective schools. Each participant will also receive university graduate credit and classroom materials.

The Kentucky Reading Project (KRP), the hallmark initiative of the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development (CCLD), is in its tenth year of existence, providing professional development for over 2500 teachers since 1998.

CCLD is a collaboration of the state’s eight public universities and the National Center for Family Literacy, and is operated by the University of Kentucky College of Education. CCLD’s mission is to promote literacy throughout the Commonwealth through professional development and research for educators from early childhood through adulthood.
